Have you ever heard of TRPV1, TRPM8 and Piezo channels? We hadn’t until about 6 years ago.

Well the scientists who discovered them Physiologist David Julius, PhD, University of California San Francisco, and neuroscientist Ardem Patapoutian, PhD, Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, have jointly been awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.

This research was done almost 25 years ago but it has paved the way for translational medical products such as NeedleCalm which utilises TRPM8 and Piezo. Congrats to Dr Julius and Dr Patapoutian!

Fun Fact: NeedleCalm version 1 contained a crazy concoction of natural oils to utilise TRPV1 but it was too hard to control the long acting effects which felt similar to Deep Heat Rub or Tiger Balm. Not great for kids or people with sensitive skin!
