Margo’s story: facing a lifelong fear of needles

Community feature, shared with permission

Margo, a NeedleCalm follower based in the United States, has lived with severe needle phobia since childhood. A traumatic series of injections at age five left lasting trauma that followed her into adulthood, eventually becoming severe enough that she required sedation for routine dental procedures involving needles.

When bloodwork became medically necessary to investigate a health concern, Margo’s fear intensified to the point of tears and near-fainting at multiple appointments. Rather than continuing to avoid care, she made the decision to confront her phobia directly.

Working with a therapist, Margo underwent EMDR therapy to address the root trauma behind her fear. After weeks of preparation, she returned for bloodwork — this time supported by a trusted phlebotomist, grounding techniques, her mother’s presence, and a personal tactile tool.

For the first time in her life, she completed the procedure without crying.

Margo has told us that following NeedleCalm’s content online played a meaningful role in her journey, helping her feel less alone in an experience that can otherwise feel isolating and shameful. We’re honoured to have played even a small part in her story, and grateful she’s chosen to share it to help others facing the same fear.
