In October Lauren had another visit to the SPASM HealthCare Museum in Gladesville mostly for research purposes but it was great catching up with the volunteers and hearing about their IV cannula experiences as young clinicians.
Commonly, some patients still believe that the needle is left in their body after the cannula insertion, prior to the introduction of single use cannulas in the 1970’s this actually was the case. To make things more interesting the metal cannulas were cleaned and sharpened by hand and re-used. Imagine the amount of needle-stick injuries!
